How to Drive Safely in a Storm

In the UK, it feels like we are facing a new storm every week with high-speed winds and flooding conditions. While the obvious advice is to stay inside and avoid driving if at all possible, many of us commuting to work or doing school runs in the extreme conditions can end up getting caught in the thick of it. Here at MyCarNeedsA.com, we want to give you some tips on how you can safely drive in stormy conditions.

Go slow

An obvious piece of advice is to take it slow, do not rush and allow for extra journey times. High winds can get under your car and affect driving and braking significantly. This can be brought on by strong gusts that will take you by surprise.

Plan your journey

Before setting out on the road, make sure you research and allow extra time for your journey. This will allow you to set on a route that is well sheltered giving you less exposure to the weather conditions. Let people know you’re heading out in the event that you find yourself stuck and your phone runs out of charge.

Keep your hands on the wheel

During high winds, ensure that you keep both hands on the wheel so you have maximum control at all times. Like mentioned above, high winds can affect your driving and braking.

Turn your lights on

During strong winds and rains, along with spray-on roads, visibility can become difficult. Use your lights as this will allow other drivers to see you from a distance.

Take care when overtaking

High sided vehicles can represent a hazard when overtaking, driving past lorries can result in a sudden gust from the side as you clear so be prepare for this change in how the vehicle may respond.

Keep your distance

Make sure you allow for extra distance than normal between you and the car in front, increase the two-second rule to three-second rule.

In the event that you find yourself braving the weather conditions, it’s always a good idea to pack provisions before leaving the house. Pack warm clothes, a fully charged phone and some food and water.
