How do I know When My Car Insurance Ends?

Driving without car insurance is illegal and you will receive points on your licence. As the driver, it’s your legal responsibility to make sure that you're not driving without insurance.

It can be confusing to know who you are insured with, or even if you're insured at all.

To help you, and ensure the safety of yourself and other drivers, it's important to know whether or not you’re insured to drive your car… and this is how;

When does My Car Insurance Run Out?

Normally, car insurance policies will last for a year, unless you have a short-term policy.

The insurance will run out at 23:59 on the expiration date. So, if you end up having an accident at 00:05 the next day, your insurance will not cover you, even though it’s only a few minutes later.

This is why it’s really important that you renew your insurance and get a new policy in advance and don’t leave it until the last minute.

Try putting a reminder on your phone a few months before the insurance is up, to help you remember to get a new policy. Or ask your insurance provider if you can set up an auto-renewal system.

If you can’t remember what date you started your car insurance policy? Then try this;

How do I Check My Car Insurance?

The quickest way to check whether or not your car is insured is to head over to the Motor Insurer's Database (MID) website and run your number plate through their system.

Their database holds information for all vehicles insured in the UK.

The search is free and will provide you with the information you need to know whether or not the car is insured; if you need to find out more information, such as the insurer’s name or what specific policy you are on then you will need to pay a fee of £4.

Instead of paying the £4 fee, you could try looking at your policy documents, your emails (junk and spam folders too!), or even looking through your financial statements to see if you can find a payment to an insurance provider. From there, you can contact them for more information.

What Happens if My Car Isn’t Insured?

If you get caught driving without an insured car, then you have committed an IN10 offence. From this, you could be fined up to £300 and be served six penalty points on your licence.

If your case is taken to court, then it’s possible that you will be disqualified from driving.

Even if you aren’t using your car and it’s just sitting in your garage collecting dust, you still need to pay insurance for it. The legislation called “The Continuous Insurance Enforcement” states that by law, all drivers must have their car insured at all time.

If you aren’t using your car, then you need to declare it off the road which is known as the “Statutory Off-Road Notification” via DVLA to avoid any penalties.
