Beginners Guide to Brake Discs & Pads

The brake system of our cars is made of a number of different parts such as brake pads, discs, fluids and callipers. All of these different parts play vital roles in slowing down your vehicle, bringing it to a complete stop to keep both you and other road users safe on the roads.

When it comes to keeping your brakes in good condition, you’ll need to keep an eye on the different parts. If you notice that your car isn’t performing as it should be, one of the most common reasons why could be to do with your brake discs and pads.

What is a brake pad?

Brake pads are a component of the braking system composed of steel back in plates with friction material bound to the surface that faces the brake discs.

What is a brake disc?

A brake disc is usually an iron disc attached to the suspension of the car and is gripped by brake pads held in by a brake calliper.

Common signs your brake pads need placed

●If you hear a loud screeching noise from the brakes when fully depressed, you need new brake pads. If it’s happening frequently, then you need to have them replaced sooner rather than later.

●Grinding or growling noises are a sign you may also need to replace the brake rotors and pads. This is because when you hear this noise, the brake pads are fully worn down, meaning the metal disc and calliper are rubbing together, causing more damage.

●You can inspect the brake pads yourself, if you notice there is less than a quarter of the brake pad left then they need to be replaced before more damage is done.

●Vibrating brake pedals are signs that your pads are worn out.

How to maintain your brake discs and pads

By maintaining your car’s braking system, you will be ahead of the warning signs and keep your car's performance intact. Here are a few things you can do to maintain your brake pads and discs:

●Check the brake discs regularly for signs of damage by removing the tyre and looking for uneven wear or rusting of the part.

●If you’re replacing the tyre, always check the brake calliper to make sure it’s secure and if your pads are looking thin or you can see metal showing through them, they also need to be replaced.

●Brake fluid top up and replacements are also key for keeping your braking system in good health.
