Common Car Problems and Complaints

While owning a car makes life a bit easier and allows you to be more independent, you do end up pumping a lot of money into it. And no, we are not just talking about the price, we are talking about price plus all the common problems that can go wrong with our cars! Before you buy your next car, do a good bit of research! While the new Fiat 500s are very pretty, there’s a reason why people say FIAT stands for Fix It Again Tomorrow.

Certain makes and models will be more prone to some problems than others, which is the unfortunate thing sometimes. But, here our are top five common car problems and complaints that I think it’s safe to say, we all have experienced at some point in our lives!

The Most Common Car Complaints

The best advice we can give anyone is if your car is making a funny noise or you have a light on your dash, DON’T IGNORE IT!! Car damage is progressive, which means that taking care of those minor repairs, can prevent thousands of pounds in future repairs.

1. Worn brake pads

Ah, one of the most common, yet most dangerous car problems we can face. It’s inevitable that brakes naturally wear down over time. That’s why it’s so important to keep up with the maintenance! Try and catch the problem long before true failure, common signs are brakes screeching and you may notice that it’s taking you longer to come to a complete stop than normal.

2. Uneven tyre wear

Some tread wear is normal overtime on our tyres, but when it’s excessive very early on, this is not normal at all!! This could be through a factory defect in the tyre itself, or it could be due to the fact your wheels have been misaligned from driving over pot holes or hitting a curb.

3. Lights – Headlights, brake lights or indicators

Whether it’s a burnt-out bulb or a poor connection, if you have any lights out on your car, it’s a very serious safety issue! How is the person behind meant to know whether you’re turning left or braking when your brake and indicator lights are out? Bulbs are now designed to last longer than they ever have been, but sometimes corrosion and poor wiring is the root cause.

4. The dreaded dead battery

Is your car not starting? It could be due to a dead battery. This can be caused by a defect with the car, or with mistreatment (ie leaving on your lights all night). Dead batteries instil fear in car owners, but while repairs can be as simple as using jump leads, batteries actually need to be replaced every six or so years! 5. Overheating

While this is rare due to very complex cooling systems in modern cars, overheating is still a problem for some car owners! Staying on top of radiator services is a way to reduce the potential for overheating issues.

There are many common problems that we can experience with our cars, some will be more common in newer models and some will be more common in older models. If you’re experiencing any of these car problems or your problem wasn’t listed, reach out to see how our local mechanics can help you!
