What's the Difference between Car Insurance and Car Warranty

Car insurance and car warranty are two different types of protection that you can get for your car:

Car insurance will help you pay for any damage caused to your car from an event that you had no control over (such as an accident or natural disaster).

Car warranty, on the other hand, is to help you pay for breakdowns: this could be due to manufacturing defects or something being wrong with an element of your car.

However, sometimes it can be difficult to determine what protection scheme an event falls under; for example, if you get into an accident because of your brakes failing; your car insurance would cover the cost of the damage to your car and the one you crashed into, but not the repair cost for your brakes.

Car Insurance

Car insurance will help you cover the cost of repairs if something or an event happened that was out of your control. Below are the most common coverages that are included in a car insurance policy:

-Liability coverage

Liability coverage will help pay for damage to someone else’s car or property and medical bills caused by an accident where you were at fault.

-Collision coverage

Collision coverage will help pay for any repairs if your car was damaged in an accident with another car.

-Medical payment coverage

If yourself or your passengers are injured in a collision, this coverage will help pay for any medical bills either of you may have.

Car Warranty

Car warranty will cover the cost of certain parts of your car if they stop working. There are many different types of warranties that you can get such as adjustment and manufacturer warranties;

Adjustment warranties

This type of warranty is usually issued by the dealer you purchased the car from. Adjustment warranty will cover items such as squeaks, rattling, leaks etc. (basically any small adjustments)

An adjustment warranty normally has a 90-day cap which you have to use it. The dealer is also the only one who can fix the little things that you have noticed when you purchased the car.

This is why it’s vital you take the car out for a test run, especially if you are buying it second hand and a long way from your home. This way, if you notice anything, you are able to agree on a date to get the elements fixed by there and then.

Manufacturer’s warranties

A manufacturer’s warranty or a new car warranty is basically the manufacturer's promise that they will help you pay for a repair/ replacement costs of all major elements of your car.

Depending on the car manufacturer, this type of warranty can last from 3 years or 36,000 miles (whichever comes first). However, other manufacturers have set their warranty to be 10 years or 100,000 miles.

Manufacturer warranties consist of two elements:

-Bumper to bumper

This will cover all parts and systems of your car such as the air conditioning system: but will not cover wear and tear parts such as your brake pads and tyres.

-Power train

This will cover the car’s engine, transmission and other mechanical parts of your car.
