Have you ever wondered what exactly is anti-lock braking system? Otherwise known as ABS, your anti-lock braking system is a standard safety feature in all modern cars.
Even when you have years of driving experience behind you, you can sometimes face the unexpected. In attempt to avoid a collision or danger ahead of you, your instincts will kick in to hit the brake. This is then when your anti-lock braking system steps in.
The ABS has been designed to prevent the wheels from locking up and to help maintain grip on the road.
The anti-lock braking system is part of an overall stability system called the electronic stability control, designed to monitor wheels when they come under heavy braking.
Each wheel will have a sensor attached to it and when those sensors detect the wheel is about to lock up and stop moving, the control releases the brake for a moment.
The anti-lock braking system will continuously and repeatedly apply optimum braking pressure to each wheel, which means the system will brake enough without locking the wheels.
When the ABS is active, you can sometimes feel a pulsation through the brake pedal when you are pressing it. It’s there to help you maintain control of your car, rather than bringing it to a complete stop. It also reduces the risk of skidding, helping to keep you safe on those cold icy mornings. But remember, the car’s braking distance may increase! If you continue to drive straight into danger, the car may not stop in time even if your instincts are telling you otherwise. It’s a common misconception that the anti-lock braking system will reduce the stopping distance.
Like any repair job, the make, model, year of your vehicle, along with the severity of the problem will all have an impact on the cost. Thankfully, we can offer an estimate! If you need to replace your anti-brake system sensors, expect to pay around £100 – £200. If you need to replace the ABS control modules, expect to pay anywhere between £200 - £600.
Then you pay your labour on top of that!
If you’re having problems with your anti-lock braking system and need to get it repaired, why not get a quote from a local mechanic in your area!
